|Charles W. Smith received his undergraduate degree from Boston College magna cum laude in 1972 and his Juris Doctor Degree from St. Louis University in 1975. While serving as an Assistant State's Attorney in Lake County from 1976 to 1979, Mr. Smith successfully prosecuted the first death penalty case in Lake County under the current death penalty statute.
From 1979-2001, Mr. Smith was a partner of Rosing, Smith, Ericksen, Zeit & Stanczak, Ltd. Then, on January 1, 2002, he founded Smith & LaLuzerne, Ltd.
Mr. Smith is a member of the Lake County Bar Association, Illinois Bar Association, the Florida Bar, and is admitted to practice before the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. He is past Chair of the Illinois State Bar Association Traffic Laws and Courts Section Council, as well as past President of the Lake County Bar Association.
Over the past 30 years, Mr. Smith has successfully tried to verdict hundreds of cases in both the criminal and civil courts, as well as arguing cases in the Second Appellate District and before the Illinois Supreme Court. He concentrates his practice in governmental law, personal injury, civil and criminal litigation.
In addition to his trial and appellate practice, Mr. Smith has represented several governmental bodies, including cities, villages, park districts, sanitary districts, and townships.
Outside of his practice, Chuck is active in church and community activities. He is a member of the Development Board of St. Anastasia Catholic Church and a member of the Board of Directors of Victory Memorial Hospital. Chuck and his wife, Michele, are the parents of Lt. Megan Donnelly, USN, a 2002 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy who is currently a naval aviator flying P-3 aircraft for the Navy, and Brian G. Smith, a 2005 graduate of Boston College and a 2008 graduate of Catholic University. In 2008 Brian joined the firm.
